Do You Want to Pass the BJCP Exam?

As of April 16, 2012, the founders of Craft Beer U have decided to take some time to reorganize in order to revamp the Better Beer Scores course material now that the new updated BJCP online exam has been released.

We do not know exactly how long this will take, but rest assured we will be updating information here, so please stay tuned. Until such time, we have decided not to schedule any new courses.

Courses in session now will continue as normal.

If you have signed up for a forthcoming course beginning in April or May 2012, you will be contacted shortly.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for all your support.

Why Better Beer Scores?

In our contact with many homebrewers nationwide - through homebrew clubs, beer competitions and other beer-related events and organizations – we have learned a number of relevant facts:

  • There is a lot of interest in beer judging and support for the BJCP’s efforts to educate and certify qualified beer judges. The sheer numbers and locations (U.S. and international) of scheduled BJCP exams in 2011 is evidence of this.
  • Through our direct involvement as competition organizers, judges, and stewards in many beer competitions, we know that there are seldom enough qualified judges available to optimally judge the competition.
  • Many BJCP exam study groups are ad hoc - often lacking structure, facilitator expertise, and/or effective instructional design.
  • Individuals who reside outside major metropolitan areas often have no access to study groups and must prepare for the exam completely on their own. As a result, many of these individuals end up abandoning their pursuit of BJCP certification.
  • Judges seeking higher judging ranks (National and Master) frequently feel that basic exam study groups are inadequate for their needs. Many give up on pursuing higher rankings. In some cases, this discourages them from going after additional judging opportunities (since accumulating more judging points has become irrelevant to them).
  • In our experience conducting local exam study groups, we have often heard comments like:
    • “You guys should do more of these courses and charge for them. People would be glad to pay to get this quality of training.”
    • “You should figure out a way to deliver this over the web – so more people would have access.”
    • “I wish I had this training the first time I took the exam. I might have passed.”
    • “I have learned a ton of stuff that will help me be a better brewer.”

Based on these market needs, we decided to create Craft Beer Ed-Ventures and offer the Better Beer Scores webinar series.
